Victim Notification System

The U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are committed to ensuring that victims of federal crime are treated fairly as their case moves through the criminal justice system. In partnership with the U.S. Attorneys’ Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Federal Bureau of Prisons, the Postal Inspection Service uses the online Victim Notification System (VNS), in English and Spanish, to generate letters to victims advising them of their rights and providing information about events or defendants related to a case.

Most victims will receive a letter and be directed to the Internet or call center for further information. The letters contain the victim’s VIN and a PIN to give them access to VNS.

Information for victims is also available at the Internet site and by calling toll-free 1-866-DOJ-4YOU (1-866-365-4968). Callers must enter their VIN and PIN to receive custody information and notice of upcoming court events.
