GARNER MAN CHARGED WITH MAILING EXPLOSIVE

United States Attorney Matt M. Dummermuth announced today that JOHN WORMAN, 57, from Garner, Iowa, has been charged with one count of mailing an explosive. The charge is contained in an Indictment unsealed today in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.

WORMAN was arrested this morning near his Garner home by law enforcement agents from the United States Postal Inspection Service; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

The Indictment charges that, in June 2005, WORMAN mailed an explosive from the Renwick, Iowa, Post Office with intent to kill or injure another. If convicted WORMAN faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and a 3-year term of supervised release following any imprisonment.

WORMAN appeared today in federal court in Cedar Rapids and was released on conditions. WORMAN’s next appearance will be set by the court.

As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney C.J. Williams and was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
