Chief Postal Inspector Alexander Lazaroff

Alexander Lazaroff

Alexander Lazaroff was appointed as the 36th Chief Postal Inspector for the United States Postal Inspection Service in January 2007. The Chief Postal Inspector oversees all operations of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which includes National Headquarters, 18 divisions, two service centers, and a National Forensic Laboratory. The installations are staffed by approximately 1,750 Postal Inspectors, 830 Postal Police Officers, and 600 support personnel.

The Postal Inspection Service is one of the oldest federal law enforcement agencies. As the investigative and security arm of the U.S. Postal Service, it is responsible for protecting employees and assets, administering security and crime prevention programs, and enforcing criminal and civil statutes against individuals who attack the postal system and misuse it to defraud, endanger, or otherwise threaten the American public.

Prior to his appointment as Chief Postal Inspector, Lazaroff served as Vice President, Area Operations for the Eastern Area, a position to which he was named in January 2003. As Area Vice President, Lazaroff was the senior postal official for Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Delaware, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, southern New Jersey, and parts of Virginia and Indiana, where he was responsible for postal operations including processing and distribution, customer service, and administrative operations.

Lazaroff, a 34-year postal veteran, began his postal career in 1973 as a distribution clerk in Massachusetts and joined the Postal Inspection Service in 1977, where he served as an inspector for eight years. He has served in a variety of postal management positions, including Plant Manager in Providence, Rhode Island, and Columbus, Ohio; Manager of Operations Support for the Northeast Area; and District Manager in Boston, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.

A U.S. Navy veteran and former Peace Corps volunteer, Lazaroff holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island.
